Why I play in the garden

I love so many things about having a garden. I love digging in the dirt, the smell of the earth, and the feel of the soil in my hands. I love planting seeds or young plants and seeing them thrive and grow. I love cutting back old flowers and overgrown branches, pulling out weeds and making space for more new growth. I especially love finding surprises in the garden, something new that has started to bloom or better yet, a whole new plant that has seeded itself or sprouted from a forgotten bulb or seed.

My garden is not a showcase garden. It’s not very organized and plants often ramble into unexpected places. I don’t know all of the gardening rules and most of what I do know has been learned by trial and error. I plant what looks nice to me and I cut down or dig out what doesn’t look nice any more. When deciding where to put things I try to remember which plants like sun and which ones likes shade. And I water the garden when it gets too dry. That’s about it.

One of the things I love the most about spending time in the garden is that it keeps me in the moment. So often I find myself thinking about the past or worrying about the future but in the garden I am able to stay focused on what I am doing at that moment. Of course there are times in the garden when I think ahead, like when I wonder how big something will grow by the next year, but for the most part I just think about what needs to be done here and now. Playing in the garden helps to clear my mind, it refreshes me and it keeps me grounded.

The garden has also taught me a lot of lessons about life. I’ll write more about that later.
